Rustler is the shop dog and part of the crew. It’s not uncommon to find him lounging on the office couch, greeting visitors, and making his daily rounds for head scratches.

sKYLER SMITH
Skyler is Managing Partner and Owner of Preferred Fire Protection and has been with the company since 2000. He began as a delivery driver, advanced to sprinkler fitter and foreman, and purchased the company after 14 years of hands-on experience. Today, he oversees daily operations and helps lead the company’s growth.
Outside of work, Skyler is a licensed general aviation pilot and an avid motorcyclist who enjoys time in the air and on the open road

ryan neilsen
Ryan is Managing Partner and Owner of Preferred Fire Protection and has been with the company since its founding in 1995. He worked his way through every position in the company, gaining hands-on experience in all aspects of the business before eventually taking over ownership. Today, he continues to play a key role in the company’s leadership and long-term success.
Outside of work, Ryan is a certified scuba diver who enjoys traveling and exploring new places whenever he can.
Field Superintendent
Mike lewis
Mike oversees daily field operations at Preferred Fire Protection, leading and supporting our crews to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards. With strong hands-on experience in fire protection systems, he coordinates manpower and schedules to keep projects on track from start to finish.
Outside of work, Mike is an avid motorcyclist and craftsman, bringing the same attention to detail to his hobbies as he does to his work.
jason watts
Jason serves as Project Manager at Preferred Fire Protection, where he is responsible for overseeing projects from pre-construction through final completion. He works closely with clients, general contractors, and field teams to ensure each project is delivered on time, within budget, and in full compliance with applicable codes and specifications.
With a strong understanding of fire protection systems and construction coordination, Jason manages schedules, submittals, material procurement, and job costs while maintaining clear communication between the office and the field. His attention to detail and proactive approach help keep projects organized, efficient, and running smoothly from start to finish.
Outside of work, Jason enjoys spending time with his kids, especially fishing together whenever they get the chance. He has also recently taken up golf and is quickly developing a passion for the game.

Warehouse manager and purchaser
Kevin serves as Warehouse Manager and Purchaser at Preferred Fire Protection, where he oversees inventory, material procurement, and daily warehouse operations. He plays a critical role in ensuring our field crews and project managers have the materials and equipment they need—when they need them—to keep projects running efficiently.
With strong organizational skills and a deep understanding of our systems and materials, Kevin manages vendor relationships, tracks inventory levels, coordinates deliveries, and maintains an organized, well-run warehouse. His attention to detail and proactive approach help minimize delays and keep operations moving smoothly.
Outside of work, Kevin has a passion for old cars, motorcycles, and just about anything with an engine. Whether restoring, riding, or simply appreciating mechanical craftsmanship, he enjoys working with machines and bringing them to life.
Danielle Johnson
Office manager
Danielle serves as the Business Office Manager, overseeing daily Administrative Operations; AR/AP, Progress/Final Billings, Lien Waivers, Payroll, and Human Resources — and proudly holding the unofficial title of “Mom of the Office.” She keeps the finances balanced, the team supported, and the day-to-day operations running smoothly, all while creating a workplace that feels organized, efficient, and cared for.
Outside the office, Danielle is a dedicated working mom of three active kids, each with a passion for multiple sports. She and her husband of 15 years stay busy cheering from the sidelines or on the bench as coach, and their home life is just as lively with two white labs rounding out the crew. While she loves to travel or spend time on the sand whenever she can, you’ll most often find her at a hockey rink — whether it’s supporting her kids or cheering on the Utah Mammoth.

edith valadez
edith serves as Receptionist and handles both Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable at Preferred Fire Protection. She manages front office communications while supporting billing, invoicing, and vendor payments, helping keep daily operations organized with her strong attention to detail. She also maintains all company licensing to ensure compliance and is a strong team player who is always ready to support and collaborate with everyone in the office.
Outside of work, Edith loves spending time with her kids and being involved in their lives. She enjoys spending time outdoors during the summer, whether relaxing or doing family activities. She is a DIY type of person, frequently taking on hands‑on projects that allow her creativity and resourcefulness to shine.
